This Harry Potter book with tea stains and folded corner auctioned for Rs 38 lakh - What makes it special?

A rare first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, originally purchased for just 10 pounds in 1997, has fetched a remarkable 36,000 pounds (approximately Rs 38 lakh) at a recent auction. The sale, which took place on Wednesday at Rare Book Auctions in Lichfield, Staffordshire, saw the final bid reach £45,000 (around Rs 50 lakh), including a buyer’s premium.

Christine McCulloch, the original owner, bought the book as a gift for her son Adam from a bookshop in Stratford-upon-Avon, unaware that it would one day become a highly sought-after collector's item. "We went in [the bookshop], bought it for 10 pounds. Adam really loved the book, and it started this sort of fascination, as with so many children all over the world now," Christine recalled in an interview with BBC News.

The book is one of just 500 hardback copies produced during the first print run in 1997, which has made it a rare gem among collectors. According to Hansons Auctioneers, the book was initially valued between £30,000 and £50,000, based on its rarity and condition.

The McCulloch family, however, did not recognize the book’s value until the 2020 lockdown when they read about the rising prices of first editions. "Once we got it verified, it was a bit of a pinch-yourself moment," said Adam McCulloch, who hails from Tansley, Derbyshire. "In some ways, I think having that bit of a story around it, some tea stains there and a folded-over corner here where someone’s enjoyed reading it – I think that adds to the magic."

The book had been stored in a cupboard under the stairs of the family’s former home in Chesterfield, untouched for years. It wasn’t until the family became aware of the book’s potential that they decided to have it authenticated. Adam believes that the imperfections, such as the stains and worn edges, only add to its charm and historical value.
